Classroom Updates
December 5
Dear parents,
Please take a note of the following key information.
Field Trip
Sponsor Families
Winter Concert
**Shoes**
It would be awesome if students could bring shoes other than their school indoor shoes that go with the outfit they are planning to wear.
Grade 1/2
Backwell Class: All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth
Please have students wear as much white as possible and pastel colors (like light blue, pink, purple and green), as they will have a visit from the Tooth Fairy.
Dear parents,
Please take a note of the following key information.
Field Trip
- We miscalculated when we were figuring out the cost for the field trip so it will now be $12.90 instead of $13.75. Mary-Lou is just in the process of putting it into SIRS for you to make payments and it should be ready soon. Sorry for the confusion. So far I have had three volunteers and I am looking for one more. Please let me know if you are able to help us out.
Sponsor Families
- A letter has been sent home with information about our classroom sponsor family for this year. There is provided information about ways that dentations can be made. Thank you for all of you support to help this family have a special holiday season.
Winter Concert
- Many students have been curious about what to wear for the winter concert! Please see below for the song they will be performing and possible ideas for outfits.

Students have been sent home with the lyrics that they will be singing at the upcoming Remembrance Day assembly. Please spend some time with your child to ensure that they are familiar with the words in this song.
In ELA students are continuing to develop their writing stamina. During our journal writing, we have been focusing on leaving spaces, using capital letter to start new sentences and the provided word lists for spelling support. Other areas of focus have been developing opening sentences and using sequencing words to organize their ideas. When reading, we have been making inferences to form predictions about texts and images. During the lead up to Remembrance Day we have been using related texts to support the students understanding of the significance of this date.
In Science we will be diving into the next science unit of ‘Boats and Buoyancy’. Initial experiences will include making predictions whether selected items will sink or float. Students will then test their predictions and record their results and make conclusions based on their results. We are looking forward to floating some ideas around with the students.
In Math students are using their mental math processes to solve problems. They will continue to use number lines to support their mathematical thinking and understanding of number location. Students will be using their close reading skills to work through math word problems.
In Social Studies we will begin to look at different communities in our country. This will enable the students to compare the features of our community to others. Students are exploring and discussion what the most important features that are needed for communities to thrive and meet the needs of the citizens. These ideas have been presented in model form using loose bits and small objects.
Due to hygiene issues, we are asking that students bring in a pair of headphones in a labeled zip-lock bag. These will be used during literacy and research tasks throughout the year. Both ear buds and headphone styles will do the trick.
Thanks for your support and have a great week.
The Grade 1 and 2 team.

Weekly Update September 25 - 29
Thursday, September 28 - Terry Fox Run (Toonies for Terry are still being accepted)
Assembly and warm-up at 9:30 in the school gym. Following the assembly, staff and students will be walking to the park across from Christ Church for our run. Parents are welcome to join in the activities so don’t forget your running shoes.
In ELA we have been working on our printing both ‘line’ letters and ‘magic c’ letters to support the letter formation and connection to letter sounds. We are looking at short ‘o’ and ‘i’ sounds in common words to support spelling development. Stories that have been brought from home have been shared with the students while exploring key elements of the books.
In Math we are continuing to look at patterns, looking at attributes and sorting items accordingly, addition and subitizing. By looking closely at the number of days of school that we have attended, we have had the opportunity to look at grouping, odds and evens and tally marks. The students have created a large scale number line that will support number sense and physical movement addition.
In Science we are continuing to explore liquids and their properties. Through experimenting, testing and observing, students are developing their vocabulary relating to the topic. Students have been mixing liquids and will be looking closely at the formation of drops and the movement of liquids.

Weekly Update – September 18 – 22
Please note these upcoming important dates and events.
Wednesday, September 20 - School Council Meeting
Thursday, September 21 -Conferences (4:00 – 8:00pm)
Friday, September 22 - NO SCHOOL
- Conferences (8:00am – 12:00pm)
Thursday, September 28 - Terry Fox run and assembly
In literacy, we have been enjoying sharing the students’ favourite books. This has been a great opportunity for them to speak in front of their peers. Students have also been identifying words with a short “a” sound and creating lists and sentences with these word families. We encourage you to search for and discuss words with short “a” sounds as you are reading with your child at home. The words can be used in sentences or put on flashcards to support sight word vocabulary.
Ie. “at” family – cat, bat, sat, mat, fat…
Students have been looking closely at the correct letter formation for line letters such as “l, k and i”. A full list of the letter formation for the alphabet can be found under the ELA section of the classroom blog.
In math, we have been engaging with the calendar and the number of days of school. Students have discussed and recorded different ways to show these numbers including numerical, pictures, tally marks and words. Students have been collecting data and making observations from graphs.
In Science, students have begun to brainstorm their prior knowledge of liquids and sharing their ideas with the class. Please ask your child to tell you about the experiment we are currently exploring in our classroom. The thinking routine of ‘See, Think and Wonder’ is used before, during and after these experiences to support scientific observations and understandings.
We look forward to meeting with our families this week. These conferences will offer a great opportunity for us all to get to know each other. We encourage you to bring your child to these meetings, as it is important to hear their voice.

Weekly Update September 11-15
We have had a smooth start to our year in grades one and two and are enjoying getting to know each other. Many routines and expectations have been established and are being practiced. Elbow Park school community will be focusing on the “Pillars of Care” this year. Through this focus, our students and staff will work on ways that we can all take care of: ourselves, each other and this place.
Each week our grade one and two teaching team will be sending out an update which will include information on what we have been learning in the various subject areas, reminders about upcoming events and/or requests for items or volunteers.
In literacy, we have been working on expressing ourselves through talking, listening, drawing and writing. Last week students shared stories about their summer vacations. This week students are sharing stories about their weekend, as well as their plans for their “brown bag” creations. Students will have opportunities to listen to stories and read stories with a partner or independently. Printing letters accurately and legibly will be worked on as well. Tall, short and fishing letters have been introduced to the students and they will be practicing forming the letters accurately while making connections to the sounds of each letter.
As we continue to get to know the interests and personalities of our students, we are inviting each student in grade 1&2 to bring in their favorite picture storybook from home. We aim to read these books to the class over the next few weeks. Students will have an opportunity to introduce the book to their peers and discuss why they selected that particular story.
We look forward to sharing these adventures together and thank you for your support.
In science, we will be starting a unit of study about “exploring liquids.” Through a variety of activities, the students will be introduced to the scientific process. They will also be encouraged to build new vocabulary, make observations and test their ideas.
In math, our focus will be on sorting and patterning, subitizing (recognizing groups of objects without counting) and playing cooperative math games.
We look forward to meeting with you and getting to know more about your child at the upcoming conferences next week.
Here are some dates you to be aware of:
